The Tagaris family has been making wine since the 1300s, starting in Greece, before immigrating to the United States at the turn of the 20th century. Owner Michael Taggares took over for his grandfather, Pete (the Second), and today they farm over 2000 acres in the Columbia River Gorge of Washington state, growing 27 different varieties of certified organic grapes as well as Fuji apples. They make Bordeaux-style wines due to the similarities in climate, taking advantage of the high elevation and south-facing hills where their vines are planted.

Tagaris uses drip irrigation and other conservation methods to reduce water usage, as well as insulated tanks, light bulbs and automatic controls to cut down on energy emissions. The winery is also dedicated to forest restoration to encourage native wildlife like owls and falcons to reside in the neighboring trees for pest management.

Family-owned since 1960, Cantine Losito Leonardo has been making wines in Puglia for three generations. The vineyard is situated between two gulfs, which allows for Adriatic Sea air to influence the terroir of the grapes. They maintain a no-till policy between vineyards to maintain water and soil health.

The winery uses their own grape pomace, a byproduct from grape crushing, for fertilization, to minimize waste and use all parts of the grape.

This winery has been cooperatively owned and operated since 1938, focusing on small productions of organic winemaking from a group of vetted partnering farms, all with sustainable methods in place. The vineyards are located in the heart of the Lambrusco region, with vines in the foothills of Scandiano and Canossa.

Practices such as hand-harvesting, recycling of glass, and keeping supply chains short to reduce their carbon footprint are all required among the partnering farms who make up this winery.

Famille Fabre is the oldest independent wine producer in the Languedoc region of France and has been certified organic since 1991. Family run since 1605, the winery has passed down for 16 generations and is now female-operated. The family has a motto, which is at the heart of their farming practices: « Une vigne a ce qu'elle a donné, elle doit ce qu'elle a reçu » which translates as: “A vine has what it was given, it owes what it has received.”

In addition to heritage organic farming practices and limited water usage, the winery is very focused on biodiversity. Sheep and donkeys roam the property to enhance soil health, there are many beehives, birdhouses and insect sanctuaries on the property, agroforestry has been implemented to bring diversity as well as shade to the land surrounding the vineyards, and to help cope with climate change, and the planting of mustard seeds and fava beans have added nitrogen to the soil while also naturally fertilizing the vines.

In addition to using the latest technology like electric tractors to reduce their carbon footprint, the winery uses self-generated renewable energy to power their facilities. In 2 years, they will be using 100% renewable energy. The vineyard also protects native wildlife like birds and insects and promotes biodiversity by raising bees, goats, geese, sheep and horses.

The Fellot family has prided itself with a thriving heritage of farming, growing and making wine since 1829. With every generation that has passed, a deeper connection to the land and the small town of Rivolet has developed. The current winemaker, Emmanuel, is the assistant mayor of Rivolet and a member of the Beaujolais development community. In 1991, after a childhood spent in the vineyards, Emmanuel took over the estate after his father and started making his own wine. The vines he tends now were planted between 1927 and 1948 by his grandfather and father, which include the Gamay grapes featured in Avaline’s Beaujolais.

The winery practices agroecology, using sustainable and organic ethics in the vineyard, which includes the implementation of organic farming. They also use organic fertilizers from their own free-range cows.

Purchased in 2007 by Rolf and Renate Freund, Domaine La Grange is a winery with unique land. It nestles up to the base of France’s Haut Languedoc Regional Nature Park, and is surrounded by 3 inactive volcanoes, which means that there is a tremendous variety of wildlife and forestland throughout the property.  In 2019, in an effort to help the estate fully embrace its potential in organic winemaking, the Freunds called on Nicolas de Saint Exupéry to join the team as head winemaker. Nicolas is himself a fifth-generation winemaker in the Languedoc, with extensive experience in the region.

While they could have planted additional vineyards, the Freunds preferred to preserve the existing ecosystem in order to encourage regional biodiversity. La Grange is also an olive farm and a heritage sheep farm and maintains a small flock of sheep on the estate— the sheep are occasionally used in the vineyards to enrich the soil. Plowing is limited in the vineyards, and Nicolas de Saint Exupéry’s style of organic farming focuses on the health of the grapes as well as the land.
